Happy Post-Valentine's Day!!

I hope everyone had a great holiday!  Ours was as good as could be expected.  We were down for last year, but we ordered PERFECTLY, so I'm happy.  All of our customers seemed very happy, which is also a wonderful thing.

I'd really like to start some sort of consumer campaign to protect people from order gatherers.  I don't think people realize that when the contact places like teleflora.com, ftd.com, fromyouflowers.com, or 1800flowers.com that they're totally getting screwed.  So much money is lost to fees alone, that by the time we florists get the order nothing is left!  If they would just call direct they'd be better off.  So, any ideas on how to fix this problem?

We had an EXCELLENT holiday - there's only two of us designers, and one part-timer student, and between the three of us we were working 14-hour days each from Thursday on (by choice - just getting a leg up on orders for the next day), but it was well worth it. We also pretty much had to place a new flower order every day last week - even our big initial order ran out! We were also down from last year, but not by much. We were expecting a LOT less, V-Day being on a Saturday and with the state of the economy, but it was BUSY. Our customers were very happy, too!

We had a lot of the usual problems with the order gatherers, especially FromYouFlowers - they kept bouncing refused orders BACK to us hoping they'd get *someone* in the shop who might not know better/would accept a below minimum order, and the gatherers would outright lie to us ("Here's the order we spoke of...", not knowing that there's only four of us, including the owner, working, so we'd KNOW who they spoke to!) on many orders. We didn't get many from 1800Flowers, as they know now that they get hung up on/refused from us. Our shop has been trying to combat crappy order-gatherers by holding classes on "How To Order, And Pitfalls To Avoid" - we explain to them about the unscrupulous gatherers, how to order from the right ones, and what floral design terms they need to know in order to place the correct order for what they're thinking of in their heads so they don't get something different than what they pictured. It's quite a popular class.

I'm super glad to hear your V-Day went well. Tell me more about your classes! They sound like a great idea...I'd also love to see any info you can share. I think I might write an e-mail for our customer list before Mother's Day on how to order. I'm also going to set up some sort of facebook page.

Oh, and as to ordering perfectly? Yay! :) We also did. Not a flower left in the shop by 3pm yesterday, and only one small bud vase left in the front display fridge. Rawk! :D
